Colbert Bump: “the curious phenomenon whereby anyone who appears on The Colbert Report gets a huge boost in popularity….” 19,469 students have already benefited from the Colbert Bump, following Stephen Colbert’s call to help public schools in Pennsylvania through his DonorsChoose.org challenge. This installment of great stories features ten classroom ideas that came to life as a result of the challenge – just a small sample of how donors across the country are helping thousands of students in low-income communities throughout Pennsylvania. (Want to know more about Colbert’s challenge? Find out here.)

Peace Rally
This teacher requested battery-powered candles for a school rally to end violence: each candle will be a visual representation of a person who was killed last year in her city. In her thank-you email to the project’s donors, she wrote: “Our elementary school is located in an urban area filled with violence. Some of our students only respond with violence and rage, because it is what they see at home and on the streets. With these candles, our yearly Peace Rally is going to be awesome! Each candle lit during a ceremony will represent a life lost to violence in our city. We are hoping that the students will see how many people really lose their lives, and just how serious it is… Our Peace Rally is at the end of April. I can’t wait to send pictures of our students taking part in this great event!”

Science Exploration Kits
This school district recently adopted a new science curriculum, but did not have the funds to buy the accompanying manipulatives. Mr. B requested the manipulatives on DonorsChoose.org so that his first graders get excited about science and are well prepared for their standardized tests. We love picturing first graders getting serious about science: going on rock scavenger hunts, keeping weather journals, and testing the pull of gravity!

As Basic As You Can Get – Paper and Pencils
It’s hard to imagine a classroom functioning without paper and pencils. More than half way through the school year, this classroom has run out of these most basic supplies. The donation of copy paper and pencils will ensure that these students complete the rest of the year with success.

Partners in Service
Mrs. F’s fourth graders are partnering with a second grade class from another school to complete a community service project. With the support of DonorsChoose.org donors, the students will be making colorful and uplifting “heart pillows” for patients who have undergone heart surgery at a local hospital. The program is highly valued by the hospital, and the students learn the act of giving without expecting anything in return. This great story entails many layers of giving!

Everyone Deserves a Chance
“My children deserve a fighting chance… one of the biggest interventions that a teacher can use to strengthen reading skills is guided reading. I am committed to doing small guided reading group instruction everyday, but my school does not really have any materials.” The teacher who submitted this project idea will be receiving a class set of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone to help her students gain a love of reading.

Geometry in Motion
This high school teacher is committed to getting innovative math resources into her classroom: through DonorsChoose.org, she will provide her students with the Geometers Sketchpad program. The interactive computer program will help her struggling students get interested in difficult topics such as geometry and algebra.

Artistic Awareness
Mrs. R’s sixth grade students constantly ask her to do art, but due to a lack of supplies, she has not been able to set aside any art period. Mrs. R writes, “Every child should have the chance to participate in art lessons.” The art materials (drawing books, sketch pads, pastels, watercolors, pencils) funded through DonorsChoose.org mean that the 30 students in Mrs. R’s classroom will get that chance!

Share Learning with an Overhead Projector
The overhead projector being shipped to this classroom will help fourth graders become more involved in their lessons. The teacher has been using chalkboard original to a nearly century old building. We’re very excited that she’ll be getting a great new teaching tool!

Get These Students Communicating Effectively
The tenth grade students at this school are enrolled in a new, mandatory course on Effective Communication. The school is located in a very rural community suffering unemployment and underemployment. The students see a clear link between effective communication skills and their future career success, and are energized by the course. The materials requested in this proposal will allow the students to record speeches on video, and watch the footage of themselves so that they will be able to quickly and easily perceive areas for improvement.

Every Cloud Has a Silver Lining
Ms. H’s fifth grade students adored the poems she read to them by Shel Silverstein during her read-alouds. Ms. H requested a class set of texts by Silverstein to do an entire unit on his work, with accompanying journals for her students to develop their writing skills throughout the unit.

Since Lehman Brothers became a DonorsChoose.org leadership partner in Chicago, many of its employees have graciously volunteered their time and skills to help us. On March 12th, Keecia Broy, Central States Executive Director, and Neeta Nadkarny, Central States Associate Director, visited the Lehman Brothers office in Chicago to lead an hour-long volunteer session during which employees helped assemble thank-you portfolios for our sponsors. The volunteers sorted through teacher and student thank-you notes, selecting the ones they wanted to include in the portfolios, and they also made collages of student photographs.

This was a great way for Lehman Brothers employees to learn more about the awesome non-profit organization their company supports (that’s us!). They enjoyed reading the funny and touching notes from local students and teachers, and the photos of the kids using their new learning resources really showed them the impact DonorsChoose.org can have in the classroom.

Thanks to this volunteer session, our DonorsChoose.org staff will have plenty of thank-you portfolios on hand to share with our sponsors, helping them to see the amazing opportunities their generosity has brought to life for local schoolchildren. The thank-you portfolios are an important part of our program, and we truly appreciate all the help we received from our Lehman Brothers volunteers in putting them together!

…so read the invitations to Chicago donor Victoria Lautman’s February 13th cocktail party, where Victoria’s friends and family gathered at her home to learn about all the amazing opportunities DonorsChoose.org can make possible. Executive Director Keecia Broy and Associate Director Neeta Nadkarny of the DonorsChoose.org Central States team talked about the history of the organization, demonstrated how to use our website, and shared student feedback that ranged from cute and funny to touching and inspiring. Guests were encouraged to get involved with DonorsChoose.org at any level–-whether through direct donations to classroom projects, gift certificates, or company sponsorship. Some guests gave their heart to a Chicago classroom on the spot and funded a project (or projects!); others purchased Valentine’s Day-themed gift certificates to share with friends, family, and colleagues. Two Chicago teachers were also in attendance, charming the group with accounts of their students, their experiences as educators, and the opportunities DonorsChoose.org has enabled them to provide to their classrooms.

This spring, Sallie Mae, the nation’s leading provider of student loans, undertook an initiative to engage employees in helping local public schools. Through a $20,000 grant from The Sallie Mae Fund, employees at the company’s Indianapolis office were given the opportunity to nominate local classroom projects to receive funding through DonorsChoose.org. Over 50 employees eagerly nominated deserving local schools, and as a reward each was given a $350 gift certificate to fund a project posted by a teacher at that school.

The employees were delighted to receive the gift certificates and apply them to classroom projects. The initiative was even more successful due to the employee buy-in created during the nomination process. Sallie Mae also experienced some great internal feedback from its employees.

Lisa York, Community Relations Manager, commented, “What a great way to help! So many employees said thank-you in their emails [nominating projects]. They really like the idea!”

The employees may like the idea even more once they receive thank you notes and pictures from the teachers and students they fund. Overall, the employees involved will not only appreciate The Sallie Mae Fund’s commitment to local schools but also be empowered to continue to help schools in their community through DonorsChoose.org.

Stephen Colbert has challenged the nation to “vote” in the Pennsylvania Democratic Primary by funding a Pennsylvania classroom project in honor of either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama (or, if you’re undecided, both!)

Last fall, the Colbert Nation gave $66,000 to South Carolina classrooms in support of Stephen’s presidential run. As of high noon today, donors have given $37,158 in honor of their favorite candidate! Do Senators Clinton and Obama have the keystones to do for the Keystone State what the Colbert Nation did for the Palmetto State? Let’s find out. Right now Obama is in the lead — this is your chance to show your support in the “straw poll that makes a difference”!

The “Democralypse!” Challenge has been picked up by The Philadelphia Inquirer, dotCommonweal, I’ve Made a Huge Tiny Mistake, and End Politics as Usual. We’re sure there will be more linkage coming as Colbert heads to Philadelphia.

Thanks to our JSON (or “Jason,” as we like to call it around here) feed, DonorsChoose.org proposals are now part of A Mashup of 29+ Social Action Platforms by Peter Deitz of Social Actions. You can cast a vote for this mashup as part of the NetSquared Mashup Challenge until this Monday 3/24. I’m personally very excited about this, as I’ve been pushing for micro-philanthropic integration for some time now and this a first step forward.

This year, the DonorsChoose.org Atlantic team partnered with Progress Energy to deliver $50,000 in energy education resources to classrooms in North and South Carolina.

Shortly thereafter, a local chapter of the eco-friendly nonprofit, Earth Force, conducted a two-hour training for its educators – all about DonorsChoose.org.

Next month, DonorsChoose.org will work with the Washington, DC Environmental Education Consortium to inform 20 environmental education nonprofits about the resources available to Washington, DC science teachers at DonorsChoose.org.

Coincidences? We think not.

Since the DonorsChoose.org model hinges on innovation, collaboration, and collective responsibility for our communities, it is no surprise that groups concerned with environmental citizenship are strong advocates for DonorsChoose.org.

Together, we’re working to ensure that teachers concerned with ecology, environmental conservation, and alternative energy know about and use our site to execute their most dynamic instructional ideas.
