The Burroughs Wellcome Fund, an independent private foundation in North Carolina, will support $25,000 in inquiry-based science and mathematics projects through DonorsChoose.org during the 2008 / 2009 school year.
These funds are only available to North Carolina teachers, so take advantage of this opportunity and submit your project today! All eligible projects will automatically be considered. See the sticky-notes below for a few project ideas that would qualify for Burroughs Wellcome Fund support.
Have fun requesting creative, hands-on resources to support your math and/or science instruction!

This seems like a wonderful opportunity. However, after following the links you have provided, I’m lost. How do I locate more details and how do I submit a proposal?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Katie,
I have submitted a math proposal and a science proposal. Is there anything specific I need to do to make sure Burroughs Wellcome Fund considers funding them?
Thank you,
Carla

Hi Carla & Joyce,
Thanks for your interest creating a hands-on math or science classroom project that will qualify for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund grant!
In order to qualify for the grant, you can submit your classroom project in the same way that you always do (click on www.DonorsChoose.org and click “Sign In” in the upper right-hand corner).
You don’t have to do anything special to qualify for this grant - we will know that you submitted a project! We will send a list of all math & science projects in North Carolina that qualify this fall, and Burroughs Wellcome Fund will pick the projects to fund.
Again, Burroughs Wellcome Fund cares about math or science projects in your classroom that focus on hands-on inquiry!
All the best,
Katie

I had earlier sent in a proposal for math supplies. My proposal has not been funded and has only 33 days to be funded. Will the proposal…Measure Up… be considered with the funding or do I need to make new proposals?

Is there a deadline for submitting proposals for these Buroughs Wellcome Fund grant funds?
Thank you,
Cameron

By the way, North Carolina teachers… All eligible projects on the site on October 1st will be considered!

Katie,
I want to submit a proposal for the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, but it is for items that are not found in the materials catalog nor do I have enough points to submit a special list of items. The proposal process will not let me proceeed unless I choose something out of the catalog, however those items are not going to be in the standard catalog.
Any suggestions?
Regards,
Jeff LaCosse

Jeff, thanks for posting a comment! The best thing for you to do will be to check out the information on the teacher point system: http://www.donorschoose.org/help/teacher_faq.html?q=155&zone=0. You are correct that you will need more points before requesting a special item!
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund will be funding other math and science projects in the beginning of 2009, so hopefully you can acquire enough points before then!

If I have more than one project that qualifies, will all be submitted for consideration?
Comment by Deb Gaul — Aug 28, 2008 @ 2:04am
Deb: Yes, all of your projects will qualify! -Katie

Hey Katie!
Thanks a lot for the work you’re doing. The Burroughs Wellcome Fund is going to make so many students happy this year!
Can you tell us when we will know if our math & science projects are going to be funded through Burroughs Wellcome this fall?
Thanks–Laura

Hi Laura,
The Burroughs Wellcome Fund will be funding projects at the beginning of October. Additionally, individuals from across the country are funding projects at DonorsChoose.org each day! So hopefully your project will get funding soon either way!
All the best,
Katie
