The Illinois Education Association (IEA) continues to help spread the word about DonorsChoose.org by highlighting us in a two-page article in their magazine, Advocate.

The article features Jennifer Shileny, an Illinois teacher who was using money out of her own pocket to buy her students’ supplies until she learned about DonorsChoose.org. Since then, she’s submitted nine projects to our website and has received full funding for six of them! In addition to highlighting Jennifer’s success with DonorsChoose.org, the article also explains how easy it is to use our website and offers tips for teachers who are first-time users.

We want to give a huge thank-you to the IEA for helping spread the word to Illinois teachers, and special thanks to the article’s author, Mary Massingale, for her fantastic story and tremendous support!

Since Lehman Brothers became a DonorsChoose.org leadership partner in Chicago, many of its employees have graciously volunteered their time and skills to help us. On March 12th, Keecia Broy, Central States Executive Director, and Neeta Nadkarny, Central States Associate Director, visited the Lehman Brothers office in Chicago to lead an hour-long volunteer session during which employees helped assemble thank-you portfolios for our sponsors. The volunteers sorted through teacher and student thank-you notes, selecting the ones they wanted to include in the portfolios, and they also made collages of student photographs.

This was a great way for Lehman Brothers employees to learn more about the awesome non-profit organization their company supports (that’s us!). They enjoyed reading the funny and touching notes from local students and teachers, and the photos of the kids using their new learning resources really showed them the impact DonorsChoose.org can have in the classroom.

Thanks to this volunteer session, our DonorsChoose.org staff will have plenty of thank-you portfolios on hand to share with our sponsors, helping them to see the amazing opportunities their generosity has brought to life for local schoolchildren. The thank-you portfolios are an important part of our program, and we truly appreciate all the help we received from our Lehman Brothers volunteers in putting them together!

…so read the invitations to Chicago donor Victoria Lautman’s February 13th cocktail party, where Victoria’s friends and family gathered at her home to learn about all the amazing opportunities DonorsChoose.org can make possible. Executive Director Keecia Broy and Associate Director Neeta Nadkarny of the DonorsChoose.org Central States team talked about the history of the organization, demonstrated how to use our website, and shared student feedback that ranged from cute and funny to touching and inspiring. Guests were encouraged to get involved with DonorsChoose.org at any level–-whether through direct donations to classroom projects, gift certificates, or company sponsorship. Some guests gave their heart to a Chicago classroom on the spot and funded a project (or projects!); others purchased Valentine’s Day-themed gift certificates to share with friends, family, and colleagues. Two Chicago teachers were also in attendance, charming the group with accounts of their students, their experiences as educators, and the opportunities DonorsChoose.org has enabled them to provide to their classrooms.
