DonorsChoose.org is excited to be on the ground in St. Louis as we expand our program to impact more teachers and classrooms in the Gateway City!
Our outreach in St. Louis has been a direct result of the involvement of Maxine Clark, CEO of Build-A-Bear Workshop. Maxine learned about DonorsChoose.org when she received a DonorsChoose.org Giving Card in the mail from Crate & Barrel, one of our fantastic corporate partners. She eagerly went to our website, redeemed her Giving Card (even adding a donation of her own), and had such a positive experience she wanted to learn more. After meeting with Charles, our founder, and our Central States staff, Maxine knew that DonorsChoose.org could have an enormous impact in St. Louis Public Schools.
Thanks to Maxine and our contacts in St. Louis Public Schools, we have officially expanded our program efforts in the city. Most recently our staff had the opportunity to strategize with SLPS district and union leaders, present to principals, and meet with local foundations and business leaders, including the St. Louis Business Journal. We are working hard to engage local foundations and corporations to start supporting classroom projects this fall.
Stay tuned for more exciting updates about our growth in St. Louis.

The Richard M. Fairbanks Foundation has committed $50,000 to fund classroom needs in Indianapolis and Marion County, Indiana. The Foundation’s “Double Your Impact” challenge will begin in early September and half-fund math, science, literacy, and social science projects. This exciting partnership follows the Foundation’s previous commitment in 2006 that funded science projects in the county. DonorsChoose.org is proud to continue this partnership and help even more classrooms in Greater Indianapolis. The Fairbanks Foundation has been supporting organizations in Indianapolis since 1986 in the areas of health, sustainable employment, and the overall vitality of Indianapolis.
Check back in September for additional details…

We are excited to announce that Lumina Foundation for Education has committed $100,000 in support of college preparatory and advanced placement high school student projects in Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, and Kentucky. This partnership reinforces Lumina Foundation’s overall goal of increased higher education accessibility across the country, while building upon the success of their KnowHow2GO campaign, which helps prepare high school students for college by providing them with resources, educational opportunities, and guidance.
Please spread the word to high school teachers in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, and Ohio! From Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate classroom supplies to science equipment and student technology, it is now easier for high school teachers in these four states to get supplies for academically rigorous courses, thanks to the generosity of Lumina Foundation.

To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, DonorsChoose.org partnered with the Indiana State Teachers Association (ISTA) to fully fund projects posted by the first 50 new Indiana teachers on our site. The campaign has already had more than 60 eager responses from ISTA member teachers at over 30 schools in every nook and cranny of the great state of Indiana.
The best thing about this incentive is that teachers who did not make the “first 50” can still benefit from the vast national network of citizen philanthropists funding projects every day at DonorsChoose.org, and the more teachers and schools getting materials for their classrooms, the better! Click here to donate to one of these wonderful Indiana projects!
Thanks to the Indiana State Teachers Association for helping us spread awareness of this special initiative!

Two exciting opportunities helped publicize DonorsChoose.org in Indianapolis last week. First, local CBS affiliate WISH-TV ran a story featuring how DonorsChoose.org has affected local Indianapolis Public School (IPS) classrooms. Complete with interviews with a teacher, principal, the superintendent, and DonorsChoose.org staff, the report highlighted how members of the local community can become citizen philanthropists and how teachers can get resources for their classroom. Read the story and watch the video, courtesy of WISH-TV. The third-grade students were thrilled to be on TV and were equally excited to receive their science materials and books from DonorsChoose.org.
In addition to the great media coverage, DonorsChoose.org kicked off a new partnership with the IPS Education Foundation, allocating $15,000 in challenge funding to half-fund projects posted by teachers in the district. Teachers have already responded strongly to the incentive, which was publicized to over 4,000 teachers and staff in IPS. Check out the challenge page and fund a classroom project!

This spring, Sallie Mae, the nation’s leading provider of student loans, undertook an initiative to engage employees in helping local public schools. Through a $20,000 grant from The Sallie Mae Fund, employees at the company’s Indianapolis office were given the opportunity to nominate local classroom projects to receive funding through DonorsChoose.org. Over 50 employees eagerly nominated deserving local schools, and as a reward each was given a $350 gift certificate to fund a project posted by a teacher at that school.
The employees were delighted to receive the gift certificates and apply them to classroom projects. The initiative was even more successful due to the employee buy-in created during the nomination process. Sallie Mae also experienced some great internal feedback from its employees.
Lisa York, Community Relations Manager, commented, “What a great way to help! So many employees said thank-you in their emails [nominating projects]. They really like the idea!”
The employees may like the idea even more once they receive thank you notes and pictures from the teachers and students they fund. Overall, the employees involved will not only appreciate The Sallie Mae Fund’s commitment to local schools but also be empowered to continue to help schools in their community through DonorsChoose.org.
