Last weekend Dana & Denis Hurley of Brooklyn, NY were married and they wanted DonorsChoose.org to be part of their celebration (How cool are they?!). In lieu of favors for their wedding guests, they chose to complete the funding for an awesome classroom project in Brooklyn! Not only did they fund the project, but they also designed a sweet bookmark for their guests – letting them know about DonorsChoose.org and the project they chose to support. You can check it out here.

I couldn’t be happier about this. First, because it supports a high-need school in my home-borough of Brooklyn, but more importantly because the project they chose exemplifies one of my favorite things about DonorsChoose.org: being able to bring truly innovative and enriching ideas to life for teachers and students. Projects such as this one don’t stand a chance of receiving funding from traditional sources, but the student experiences are invaluable.

This classroom of students with autism will receive an air mattress and a stackable washer/dryer to help “teach these children essential life skills such as washing clothes, drying clothes, folding clothes, and making a bed.” See the full details of this project here.

Thanks, Denis & Dana, for being so generous and thoughtful while making your wedding plans. Congratulations, as well! :-)

Thanks also to Ms. B for offering such a wonderful experience to your students!

Yay!

- Zach

Warmest congratulations to Bob Heck and Paige Tatum!

Bob Heck, Maryland Public Television’s “Bob the Vid Tech”, on-air host of MPT’s Kids and Family programs, has been a strong advocate for DonorsChoose.org in Baltimore City among teachers, parents and community members. Bob was recently nominated for a Capital Region Emmy for Program Host / Moderator. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for Bob that he will win on June 14th, and add to the eight Capital Region Emmys awards that he has won since 1996.

Paige Tatum, Executive Producer of Fox News in Boston for the 10 o’clock and 11 o’clock shows, helped our Northeast Team coordinate an awesome segment this fall. As the daughter of a school district superintendent in Virginia, Paige is passionate about public education! On May 10th, Paige received a Boston / New England Emmy for News Producer; you can see her accepting her award here. Paige now has a total of two Emmys!

Many of our generous institutional funders have funded half a classroom project’s costs, encouraging donors to make up the other half. We’re pleased to announce the first half-off sale using DonorsChoose.org’s new “match offer” technology. The Pumpkin Foundation / Joe and Carol Reich, known for their efforts to support charter schools throughout New York City, are offering to fund 50% of all projects at the city’s charter schools if someone like you provides the remainder. By completing these projects, you will double the impact of your donation. Click here to see all the projects eligible for the NYC Charter School Match Offer. The sale will continue until the grant is used up.

You can find out more about how Match Offers work over on our FAQ page. (Note, we’re still wrestling with what to call this new philanthropic beast — Double Donations? Red Zone Funding? Half-Off Sale? Eleemosynary Price Reduction Event? — so watch this space for its future name, or better yet leave your suggestions in the comments!) We’re hoping that The Pumpkin Foundation / Joe and Carol Reich grant will lead the way, and more foundations and companies will promote certain kinds of projects and match their grants with your donations.

Richmond International Raceway officials announced today that they will be making a monthly donation to a different classroom in need in its community of the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area. Working through DonorsChoose.org, Richmond International Raceway will fund various classroom projects throughout the school year.

Richmond International Raceway begins its campaign to further enhance local public school classrooms by funding the “Building Vocabulary That Lasts a Lifetime” project at Glen Lea Elementary School in Henrico County. The project will benefit a third-grade classroom of students who have demonstrated a desire to increase their vocabulary. Each student will be provided with their own personal vocabulary tool kit to further develop their vocabularies.

“We are so excited to team up with DonorsChoose.org to assist local public school classrooms in the Greater Richmond Metropolitan Area,” said track president Doug Fritz. “For many years we have provided financial and personal aide to various schools throughout Henrico County, our neighboring counties and the City of Richmond. With our pledge to contribute to classroom projects on a monthly basis, we look forward to helping teachers and their students in need, right here in our community.”

The following is an excerpt of an email from a DonorsChoose.org donor who shared her story with us. (Posted with permission from the donor.)

…One of the most exciting parts has been indirect feedback I have gotten in a couple of cases on the impact of my donations. [O]n your blog a couple of months ago, one of the staffers recounted an email she got from a South Carolina teacher about how various grants had helped her, including a grant for books for a little girl who was then able to pass all her state exams. I recognized this one as a project I had funded and let the teacher know how rewarding it was to hear about this success.

I also saw a repeat proposal from a teacher I funded last year (AP Statistics review books), and in this proposal he recounted how getting funding last year allowed his students to do better than the national average on the exam. I thought, “clearly, another funding opportunity for me for this year” and in fact, I did fund again. I let him know how his recounting in this year’s proposal how his students last year had fared influenced my decision to fund again this year. His email below is a good recap of why I think DonorsChoose.org is serving a vital need for teachers, donors and students.

“I often feel like you do. Are my efforts to help and teach my students going to have a lasting impact? You often have to just have faith and trust. Students sometimes return to school [after graduation] or send letters or email, and it’s then that I find it’s all worth it. For these same reasons, I just want you to know that your contributions make a difference. When I distribute these books, they often say, “Can we keep these?” “Are these really ours?” “Don’t we have to return these later?” Most of them are genuinely touched by your generosity, as I am as well.”

Whether she’s converting another friend or family member into a DonorsChoose.org supporter or telling a teacher, “DonorsChoose.org can help,” there isn’t much that the Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation Executive Director Geales Sands would not do to help improve K-12 public education in Georgetown County, SC. October 31st marked the end of the Georgetown County Challenge, a six-week campaign to fund $50,000 in requests from Georgetown teachers through DonorsChoose.org. The Frances P. Bunnelle Foundation matched every donation made to Georgetown projects during the challenge.

By October 31st, we not only met our goal of channeling $50,000 in resources to Georgetown schools, we also inspired more Georgetown teachers to introduce their classrooms to DonorsChoose.org than ever before. Over the next few weeks, valuable resources will be delivered to classrooms across Georgetown, SC, benefiting thousands of local students.

Like the students and teachers of Georgetown County, SC, we at DonorsChoose.org feel incredibly fortunate to count Geales Sands among our biggest supporters and friends.

Over 20 music bloggers have banded together to create After The Jump, a concert on 8/26 at Studio B in Brooklyn, to benefit music education proposals on DonorsChoose. Tickets are on sale now and only 12 bucks! I haven’t heard of a single one of the bands but I’m, you know, old and stuff.
