We are thrilled to be partnering with the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation again this school year to bring math and science resources to classrooms in the Bay Area. Last year, the Foundation helped to fund over sixty compelling math and science projects, impacting more than 3,000 students! During the 2009-2010 school year, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation is happy to fund classroom projects that provide robust learning experiences for K-12 public school students.
As science folks themselves, the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation truly understands the need to provide rigorous and meaningful learning experiences to students. The Foundation believes that a nation’s strength in the fields of math, science and engineering enables its capacity to perform, enhances its opportunities for innovation and leads to a better quality of life for society as a whole. To further this mission, the Foundation will provide partial or complete funding for math and science projects in which the teacher describes how the requested materials will enhance the curriculum or provide a way for the students to meet required standards. So, if you are a science or math teacher in Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, Santa Clara or San Mateo County with some great ideas for your classroom, submit your project at www.donorschoose.org/teachers. Make sure to include the words “curriculum” or “standards” in your project for funding consideration.
Thanks so much to the S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation for partnering with DonorsChoose.org to bring science and math learning to life!

This year Best Buy launched www.at15.com, an innovative site that harnesses the power of online interactivity to provide a platform for teens to speak their minds and, among other things, direct $1M in Best Buy corporate giving.
One component of this site is the Best Buy @15 Change Exchange, in which Best Buy selects four non-profits to vie for $250,000 each quarter. DonorsChoose.org is part of the current Change Exchange campaign that runs until October 31st. From now until October 31st teens can register at www.at15.com and earn points completing different activities. Then at the end of the campaign (October 15 to 31st) they allocate their points to the non-profit they want Best Buy to support. Each non-profit receives the percentage share of $250,000 that matches the percentage of the total points they received from @15 members.
We’d like to thank Best Buy for this awesome opportunity!
Teens – check out our profile on www.at15.com/changeexchange and give your points to DonorsChoose.org to support public school classrooms in need!

Open Society Institute - Baltimore (”OSI-Baltimore”) invites Baltimore City teachers to tap into $25,000 in funding to improve student attendance.
Examples of classroom projects OSI-Baltimore will be supporting:
- Elementary: Giving out certificates or snacks at an awards ceremony - for the student of the week or the whole class!
- Middle: Giving out play money for each day of attendance; allowing students to purchase rewards.
- High: Holding regular contests for strong attendance and improved attendance, and giving out rewards.
How OSI-Baltimore will be funding projects:
- Teachers should submit projects for materials $350 or lower.
- This funding will be offered as a 50% match offer, so OSI-Baltimore funding will activate automatically when other donors choose to join in and fund the rest of the project!
- High school teachers: If your project also is preparing students for the rigors of college, mention this in your short essay, so that your project will receive 50% funding from The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
Click here to see the teacher flyer with examples of the types of classroom projects that OSI-Baltimore is supporting (file is 1 MB; allow 10 - 15 seconds to download).
Visit OSI-Baltimore’s website to learn more about OSI-Baltimore or student attendance.

The Arkansas Community Foundation (ARCF) is happy to partner with DonorsChoose.org to implement the 2009 SIMS (Science Initiative for Middle Schools) program in Arkansas! Funding for this mini-grant program is made possible by an endowed gift to ARCF from the Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation.
Each year, SIMS mini-grants are available to Arkansas public school teachers in grades 5, 6, 7, and 8 who are teaching science in counties served by one of ARCF’s 26 local offices. ARCF and its local offices will consider projects that meet the criteria listed below and determine which projects receive funding. Follow this link or visit www.arcf.org and click “local offices” to determine if your school is located in a county served by ARCF.
Arkansas Counties Served:
Ashley, Baxter, Calhoun, Carroll, Chicot, Clark, Cleburne, Columbia, Conway, Craighead, Cross, Desha, Faulkner, Fulton, Garland, Greene, Hempstead, Howard, Izard, Jefferson, Johnson, Lee, Lincoln, Little River, Marion, Miller, Mississippi, Monroe, Montgomery, Ouachita, Phillips, Pope, Pulaski, Sebastian, Sevier, Sharp, St. Francis, Washington, and White.
Mini-grants may be used to purchase consumable science materials; kits are permitted if they are grade standard based and meet the State Science Frameworks requirements. All projects should conform to the current science frameworks as published in February 2006, and the framework(s) applicable to the project should be cited within the project narrative. Please see this document for the Science Curriculum Framework.
Use DonorsChoose.org to submit your project narrative and request for materials. Follow this link to create a teacher account and get started. To participate, you will be asked to write a short description of your project and, using an online shopping cart, select the supplies required to implement your project. Please note the following eligibility requirements:
- You must teach science in grade 5, 6, 7, or 8 in a public school in a county served by a local office affiliated with Arkansas Community Foundation. See above to determine geographic eligibility.
- Your project must meet the State Science Curriculum Framework, linked above.
- Your project materials must cost $500 or less. If the materials you select cost more than $500, your project will not qualify for this grant from ARCF
- You must submit your project between August 15th and September 15th. Projects submitted after September 15th will not qualify for this grant.
- If you meet these qualifications, your request will be referred to local ARCF committees who will select up to 300 projects for full funding. If your project is selected, you will be notified by DonorsChoose.org via e-mail by October 31st, and DonorsChoose.org will order your supplies to be shipped to you at your school address. If your project is not selected, you will still have the opportunity to be funded by the thousands of generous individual donors visiting DonorsChoose.org every day.
For further information, please read the DonorsChoose.org FAQ for Teachers. Once you register for a teacher account, you will have access to an online tutorial to answer any other questions you may have.
Arkansas Community Foundation, in partnership with DonorsChoose.org, looks forward to encouraging hands-on middle school science projects in schools throughout the state!
