Achievement soars when students see their identities reflected in their teachers and learning materials. As students and teachers head back to the classroom, we're teaming up with The Allstate Foundation to rally the public and help create inclusive, anti-racist, and culturally responsive learning environments.

Starting Monday, August 23 and while funding lasts, The Allstate Foundation is matching donations to two types of projects: Racial Justice & Representation projects and projects from teachers of color looking to have their first DonorsChoose request funded. Projects costing $1,000 or less will qualify for this match — learn more.

DonorsChoose Launches New Subject Category: Racial Justice & Representation

Since 2018, teachers have increasingly asked for resources that allow their students to “see themselves” in their learning materials. For some teachers, this looked like Ms. Lockhart’s request for books with a diversity of protagonists or Ms. Emily’s request for art supplies that can reflect the full range of skin tones. Other teachers focused on bringing anti-racism front-and-center, like Ms. Kight Witham, who requested a class set of Stamped by Jason Reynolds — a remix of Ibram X. Kendi’s Stamped from the Beginning designed to engage and energize students.

Thanks to support from The Allstate Foundation, we’ve made this an official subject category, giving donors an easy way to search for and support requests that center racial justice, representation, and equity in the classroom.

The Allstate Foundation is matching donations to every Racial Justice & Representation project to celebrate this new subject category.

Teachers of color play a vital role in the success of all students — especially students of color.

Research shows that students of color benefit when they see themselves in their teachers, and all students benefit from the classroom environment that diversity creates. In one study, the graduation rate among Black students increased by 33% if they had at least one Black teacher between third and fifth grade (IZA Institute of Labor Economics). Yet, there remains a huge divide: half of public school students are people of color, but only 20% of public school teachers are people of color.

The teachers who use DonorsChoose are more diverse than U.S. teachers as a whole and are more likely to teach in low-income communities. A recent study from the University of Michigan found that receiving funding through DonorsChoose led to teachers staying in the profession longer. By funding the requests of these educators through DonorsChoose, we can help retain and empower them.

The Allstate Foundation is matching donations to projects from teachers of color who’ve never had a DonorsChoose request funded.
