Update 4/9/18: Since our campaign to support military-serving public schools launched this past Veterans Day, the impact on these classrooms has been incredible. Craig Newmark Philanthropies gave $1 million to support over 1,800 teachers who work with students from military families, reaching 318,000 students. (See the full impact here.) Thank you to Craig Newmark and all of the teachers and donors who are enriching the lives of military kids, and we can’t wait to see what you do next!
We’re proud to have so many amazing teachers on DonorsChoose.org who teach in military-serving public schools. To make it even easier to support these classrooms, you can now search the site specifically for classrooms that serve students of military families. To mark the introduction of this new feature and honor Veterans Day, every donation to these classrooms will be matched starting today, November 9, while funds last. Thanks to Craig Newmark Philanthropies for partnering with us for this special funding opportunity!
Using this special search, you can find requests from U.S.-based public school teachers at schools on military bases, schools that report to the Department of Defense, and schools where 20% or more of the student population lives on or near a military base.“These kids serve right alongside their loved ones in uniform,” says Mrs. Burrow, a teacher on Nellis Air Force Base in Nevada. “They sacrifice so much and though it is hard, they proudly do it. I have seen the tears when their mom or dad deploys and I have seen the excitement as students have welcomed their loved one back from a deployment. Military life is tough but these kids are strong and deserve the best.”DonorsChoose.org founder and CEO Charles Best adds: “We owe a special debt to the children of our nation’s military families, who have to live apart from their parents for months at a time or relocate frequently to new communities. We so appreciate the support of Craig Newmark Philanthropies, which will bring new educational resources into schools serving military families.”Are you a teacher serving military students?
