Earlier this week, The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation teamed up with the donors and public school teachers on our site to create a very special day for classrooms across the country. On August 22, The Gates Foundation helped inspire our community of donors to bring record-breaking support to teachers as they welcome students back to school. The Foundation gave every donation made that day a 50% “back-to-school boost.” (For example, every $60 donation became a $90 donation, and so on.) Here’s a breakdown of the big day:
- $4.2 million total was donated to classroom projects.
- 20,184 teachers in 13,094 public schools had a classroom project that received support
- Over 40,000 Individual citizen donors gave, shattering their one-day giving record.
The thousands and thousands of projects funded with the help of this campaign will have a tangible impact on the lives of teachers and students — whether it’s the bean bag chairs that will arrive at Ms. Bohn’s Minnesota classroom, the Spanish literature that Mrs. Stiles’ students will enjoy in California, or the basic, essential supplies Mrs. Luckart needed in Connecticut. Mrs. Mahaffey, an elementary teacher in South Carolina, summed it all up in a note to supporters:
“It's people like you, who are interested in providing support for teachers, that make all the difference!”
We couldn’t have said it better.
